I've always admired people who can walk into a room wearing a tiny pair of understated stud earrings and look effortlessly elegant.
I am not one of those people.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate a beautiful simple earring. I even make them from time to time. But whenever I sit down to design jewellery for myself, I seem to gravitate towards colour, movement and earrings that are perhaps a little larger than strictly necessary.
The bigger and more colourful they are, the happier I seem to be.
With Spring and Summer in full swing, I've found myself once again drawn towards creating jewellery that reflects the bright energy of the season.
And that means one thing.
Statement earrings.
I've recently ordered some gorgeous new colourful components for Lapanda Designs, and I've been eagerly waiting for the opportunity to turn them into finished pieces. Depending on when you're reading this, some of them may already be listed, while others are still making their way from my worktable to the website.
That's often how things happen around here.
An idea starts with a handful of beads, a colour combination or an interesting shape. Then it sits on the workbench while I shuffle pieces around, hold them up to the light, change my mind several times and generally make a nuisance of myself before finally deciding I've got it right.
The new collection will feature some larger earrings, but don't let that put you off if you're worried about weight.
One thing I'm always conscious of is comfort.
I love a dramatic earring, but I don't particularly enjoy feeling as though my ears are being recruited for heavy lifting duties. So I've chosen components that allow me to create bold designs while keeping them pleasantly lightweight and easy to wear.
For me, statement earrings have never really been about fashion trends.
They're about expression.
Some people make a statement with a necklace.
Some do it with bright shoes.
Others have a signature handbag.
For me, it's almost always earrings.
They sit right beside your face, they catch the light when you move, and they have an uncanny ability to brighten an outfit even on days when you've simply thrown on whatever happened to be nearest the wardrobe door.
I think that's why I keep coming back to them.
There's something joyful about wearing colour.
Not because it signals wealth, status or sophistication.
Simply because it makes you smile.
The jewellery I enjoy creating for Lapanda Designs has never been about impressing people.
It's about celebrating individuality, creativity and a little bit of fun.
In fact, one of my favourite things about statement earrings is that they tend to attract people who aren't afraid to show a bit of personality.
The kind of people who choose colours because they love them rather than because they're fashionable.
The kind of people who aren't worried about blending into the background.
The kind of people who view jewellery as something to enjoy rather than something to keep locked away for special occasions.
I suspect many of my customers fall into that category.
The funny thing is that every year I tell myself I'll create a small collection.
A few earrings.
A handful of designs.
Nothing too ambitious.
Then I discover a new bead, a new colour combination or an interesting component and suddenly the collection starts growing all by itself.
I'm beginning to think this may be a recurring theme in my creative life.
Still, there are worse problems to have.
As I write this, trays of beads are appearing across my workspace, colourful pieces are being paired together and new designs are slowly beginning to emerge.
Some will be bold.
Some will be bright.
Some may be slightly more dramatic than originally intended.
And honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way.
