Attention on the Animal Kingdom – Inspiration, Awareness and Giving Back

I have always felt an affinity with animals. To me, they are not lesser beings, nor are they insignificant. I’ve always been aware that every form of life—be it animal, insect, bird, or plant—has its own intricate existence, deserving of respect and appreciation. The complexity of the natural world is something we are only beginning to understand, and I am often struck by how much there still is to learn.

One of my earliest significant memories is of a little puppy. It was early in the morning opposite our bus stop. All of a sudden he was lying by the side of the road, having just moments before bounced across the field opposite the bus stop as he followed some children on their school journey. He was suddenly hit by a car, hurt badly but still breathing. I remember the ache in my chest, the desperate feeling of wanting to help but not knowing how. The manner in which he had been simply moved to the side afterwards from the way of the traffic truck a chord. They were and still are considered quite often as 'just animals.'  While everyone stared on, frozen in amazment, I was surprisingly compelled to overcome my natural impulse to turn away and to carry him to the vet down the road instead of leaving him there to die. (In hindsight, of course, we would have called the vet to the scene instead of moving the patient. That moment stayed with me, shaping how I see animals—not as beings separate from us, but as creatures who share our world, our need for care, and our ability to feel both joy and pain. From then on, I realised how their position in society was different from ours, vulnerable and how unjust it was. Don't worry, that's the only shocking story today.

Throughout history, new discoveries have shaped the way we see the world. We like to think of ourselves as enlightened, yet many of our ‘truths’ are merely stepping stones towards a greater understanding. Think of the flat earth theory—once a widespread belief, gradually challenged and disproved. Many of the ideas we hold today may also evolve with time. For this reason, I remain open-minded, neither blindly accepting current consensus nor outright rejecting it. Instead, I believe in continuous learning, observation, and questioning. Where I usually distrust or at least question areas where humans interfere in the lives of animals for our own benefit I remain open to some areas of study in the hopes that knowledge could improve animal welfare worldwide if we become more enlightened as a species about their true importance and relevance to world as a whole.

Click here to see a YouTube video about the subject in relation to many different species throughout the world including but not restricted to primates.  It's about 11 minutes long and makes for a somewhat heartening piece of news.

When it comes to animals, one thing is clear: their ability to experience joy and suffering is undeniable. The question of superiority—who is more worthy, who is less—has no real relevance in my view. Kindness is kindness, and cruelty is cruelty, whether it is directed at a human or an animal. All creatures share the capacity to feel, and that alone should be enough to warrant our care and respect.

Animals as a Source of Artistic Inspiration

Animals have always fascinated me, but strangely, I have never truly explored them in my art—until now. They are endlessly inspiring, from their movement and expression to the way they interact with each other and the world around them.

For a long time, I considered myself a ‘dog person.’ Then, unexpectedly, I found myself becoming a ‘cat person’ too. My appreciation for cats grew as I started paying more attention to their world—their independence, their resilience, and their vulnerability. It wasn’t until I truly observed them that I realised how much they endure, especially in societies where they are seen as expendable.

It’s easy to dismiss the struggles of animals when we don’t see them firsthand. We tell ourselves they can take care of themselves, that nature will sort things out. But survival is not always the rule. The stories of animals overcoming adversity are powerful, yet they are far outnumbered by the stories of suffering. The reality is that many creatures struggle due to human actions—or inaction.

The Role of Animals in Our Lives

For those who have pets, the benefits are undeniable. Animals bring comfort, companionship, and even health benefits. They love us, trust us, and provide a source of emotional support that is difficult to put into words. Their presence can lower stress levels, ease loneliness, and offer a profound sense of purpose. In return, they deserve respect, care, and protection. By virtue of their very existense, as with us, they deserve all that.

People often trivialise the internet’s obsession with cute cat and dog images, but I see it differently. The reason we are so drawn to them is clear—animals represent something pure, something unconditionally loving in a world that often feels chaotic. Yet, alongside the adoration, their struggles are frequently minimised. We exaggerate their resilience as a way to ease our guilt, to convince ourselves that they will be fine without our help. But the truth is, they need us.

Raising Awareness Through Art & Giving Back

Because of my deep appreciation for animals, I feel compelled to contribute in a meaningful way. I want my creative work to not only celebrate the beauty of the animal kingdom but also raise awareness of their needs and challenges.

Through my art and giftware, I hope to highlight the wonder and value of the creatures we share our world with. More than that, I plan to establish a section within my art work dedicated to supporting animal welfare. This would most likely take the form of supporting fundraising efforts through donations to organisations that advocate for animal protection. It’s an idea that has grown naturally from my experiences, and while it will take time to develop, I believe it will become an important part of my personal creative journey.

A Personal Reflection

The more I learn about animals, the more I appreciate their individuality and their struggles. Their world is intertwined with ours, and we have a responsibility to respect and protect them. I know I am only one person, but I believe that every effort, no matter how small, contributes to a greater good.

Do you have any pets? What role do animals play in your life? Do you seek gifts inspired by the animal kingdom or nature? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Warm wishes,
Amanda
