A Slow Creative Start to the Year at Parade Handmade

Amanda Coen

It’s February. Yay. Blustery, cold, just like January and very much full steam ahead… though in a slow way, I mean.

January is a month I’ve always had a soft spot for, along with February and maybe - at a stretch - the first part of March. It’s a time for well-earned hibernation, for slowing the pace, and for leaning back into creativity without apology. It’s also a natural moment for taking stock. In my world at least.

Alongside the quieter creative energy, the early part of the year is a time for tidying the craft room, reviewing what’s worked, and gently resetting things behind the scenes. There’s admin, of course - planning, organising, restocking the less glamorous essentials like labels, business cards, QR codes, and sign-up bits. Not the most thrilling part of running a handmade business, but all part of keeping the wheels turning.

Once I get started, even those less-loved tasks can become oddly satisfying. Even social media… sort of.

New Stock & Old Traditions

I’m currently waiting (not very patiently) for some lovely new stock from Liffey Forge, and I always feel a little thrill when that delivery arrives. Each piece begins life as a real, worn horseshoe from horses here in Ireland, shaped and fitted by blacksmiths in the traditional way before being reimagined into something entirely new.

These horseshoes carry history, craftsmanship, and a sense of continuity-transformed into wall pieces, key racks, fairy doors and keepsakes that mark milestones such as new homes, weddings, engagements, boats, and meaningful moments for horse lovers. They’re practical, symbolic, uniquely and hugely special.

Looking Ahead (Without the Rush)

If I’m honest, my head is full of ideas for the year ahead in the giftware department - too many ideas, all at once, like young bulls charging out of a gate. Not ideal.

Some are projects carried over from last year, others entirely new, but I’ve promised myself to take a steadier approach. Handmade collections aren’t a race against mass production. They’re built slowly, thoughtfully, and at a very human pace.

There will be new cards, bags, ponchos and more introduced gradually throughout the year-each rolled out with care, photo shoots to do, listings and stories, just as always.

Miss Prim and a Beautiful Felt House by Ditsy Designs - Parade Handmade

In the meantime, there’s already a wonderful mix of pieces in the shop - items without a “sell-by date”, made to suit personality, taste and meaning rather than fleeting trends. Gifts that last, that feel personal, and that are chosen with intention.

Here’s to another year of creativity, craftsmanship, and celebrating life’s small and large milestones.
